This is a 2 cylinder Australian made refrigeration compressor, made by Kirby Manufacturing - Australia.

I removed it from a scrap condensing unit used on an IGA supermarket meatcase.

This one is similar to a 3 cylinder Kirby compressor that I scrapped 12 months ago, after it ran dry of oil (very little remained in crank case, mixed with melted plastic from the polypropylene splash shield) and subsequently overheated to the point of throwing the no2 con rod, jamming up and burning the motor windings out (no motor protector was fitted)

  • i honestly never knew theres copper in the compressor, never knew......

  • @atomrocketcar you can make a lot of money scrapping them if you have the time, equipment and a good supply of old compressors.

  • what does air conditioner oil look like?

  • Healthy AC comp oil should be clear, with similar viscosity to light motor oil.

Well used oil looks amber in color and is comparable to new motor oil color.

After a mechanical failure the oil will usually be metallic gray from all the metal particles suspended in it.

  • it looks dry of oil, maybe they keep the oil and scrap the compressor already dry

  • it was full of oil when I got to it, legally they ahve to drain the oil before putting a compressor in the scrap bin. but very few do it.
