Drawing a Centaur: Part 1 - Digital Inking

READ ME!

This is a speed drawing of Brom, from my upcoming webcomic, Kentauroi ( http://www.kentauroi.com ) throwing a spear with an Atlatl.

I apologize for all the zooming in and out. I've seen some of other videos on YouTube that are similar that stay zoomed out, and frankly I could never do that; the quality of the line degrades horribly when you do that (particularly when you work as large as I do, 35x23 inches at 300 dpi for this one, because I print full sized posters of my art, and it allows for more detail), and I can't settle for anything but perfectly smooth, calligraphic lines. Also, I really did try to get it as short as I could, but it's a pretty detailed drawing and I'm a perfectionist, so this will have to do. The inking stage is by far the most time consuming part.

I had some problems with corrupted codecs on some clips, and Windows Movie Maker would not import them. So I had to re-record parts from GOM Media Player (which would play them) but if it gets a bit choppy in parts, that's why.

Part 2 will finish the line work and part 3 will cover the background and possibly coloring the figure, depending on how long the background takes. 3 should be up in a couple days at most.

@PeterKato83 - I have a Wacom Intuos 3. though most tablets with a reasonably high level of pressure sensitivity should get similar results.

oh man, sorry, never saw this comment. I know it's totally late, but yes, all from the same group, Finntroll. The album, Visor Om Slutet, however, is not typical of them, they're normally a lot heavier. This was an experimental album of sorts. i liked it, but they haven't done anything like it since.

Uh. the sketch I'm inking over is MINE. It's not like I'm tracing over someone elses work. It's just that you can't go straight into refined linework without an underlying sketch, the proportions end up totally fucked.

It's awesome to see the atlatl in fantasy art. How ever as an atlatlist I do have two issues.

1.the fingerless "hammer" style is rather modern, would have liked to have seen him with a more traditional atlatl. The grip would be firmer as well.

2. the spur is actually too long. The dart/spear would have hit the end of the thrower and go crazy.

Otherwise, awesome!
