They met him during a break at a gig. Roger recalls Moon "dressed all in ginger", steaming up on the stage, pointing at the (about to be former) drummer and proclaiming, "I can play better 'an 'im!".
They let him have at and after Moon pretty much demolished the other drummer's kit, John, Pete and Rog had a huddle, then approached Moon and asked, "What ya doin' Thursday?" The rest is history.
btw, Moon *loved* telling that story; he'd howl with laughter.

Does anyone know if John actually wrote the book they talked about? I can't seem to find any book written by him.
