Classic Game Room HD reviews DEFENDER for Atari 2600 VCS video computer system. This 1980 arcade smash hit came with some surprising changes to the Atari 2600 including a row of buildings instead of mountains and only one button, but it still has a unique charm and remains highly enjoyable to play today. Defender, which is one of the best arcade video games ever created, is similar in style to a horizontally scrolling space ship shoot-em'-up, or SHMUP. It does not have power ups or mega super hyper weapons or insane bullet hell madness or end bosses, but it does have fun and addictive gameplay. Even on the Atari 2600, which butchered some arcade ports, Defender holds up to hours of gameplay with exciting action and explosions, smart bombs, landers, swarmers and mutants. It is still one of the best titles on the Atari 2600 and this review shows Defender gameplay in all its glory. Classic Game Room reviews the best new and classic video games and hardware from all video games consoles. Old school fans of retro video games will find many CGRHD reviews to enjoy.

  • Know something I always loved about the 2600? The art on the game boxes!

Games like Defender, Asteroids, Missile Command, Berzerk, and of course Yar's Revenge are good examples.

You pick up one of those and look at the box cover (or the cartridge label) and it just makes you want to play it, without even turning the box over to read the game description.

The games may have been blocks and bleeps, but the packaging (and often the instruction manuals) were high quality.

  • I am glad you mentioned the cartridge art. I always loved ATARI's early artwork. Especially on games like Missle Command and Berzerk. I felt like I was drawn into a scifi world of wonder.

  • WHY WHY OH WHY Has their not been a review..of the Fucking Atari flash back

  • U are awesome <3

  • I buy this game about sunday on ebay and it will get here Thursday, friday, or Saturday.

  • fun time in the 80's with this game. It still looks pretty good considering its roughly 30 years old.

  • Mark, I sometimes think you and I are the only ones who liked this version of Defender. I loved this as a kid and still do. It always made more sense to me that the aliens were plucking people from city buildings and not just from some see-through mountains.

  • @DiabloArcade you ever played stargate/defender II? if you have then you will know there was no excuse for such a poor pile of crap, just the same as when you compare pacman to miss pacman. i respect your opinion, like everyone deserves an opinion, just as much as i respect all the little kids who think justin beiber is some king, but thats where it ends. we were ripped off and there is no fcking excuse !!!!

  • @aIteredbeast It's awesome, it's a cult classic, and i have no clue why anyone CANT love this game, its such a classic.... and you can go home and play your xbox young man.

  • how can anyone like this game i dunno! it is as bad as pacman, if not worse !
