Locals Say Ron Paul is a Front-runner for a Reason

LAKE JACKSON, Texas - When it comes to Lake Jackson, Texas, three things leap to mind for more than a few: Dow Chemical plants, Buc-cee's stores and U.S. Representative Ron Paul, the current front-runner eight days out from the Iowa Caucuses.

While folks in Lake Jackson are long accustomed to their maverick congressman running for President, they are far less familiar with hearing the term "front-runner" attached to this dedicated oracle of drastically downsizing America's government.

"He's a little wild on a few things, but in general I support most of the things he stands for," says longtime resident Jim Bertram outside of a Luby's restaurant.

That said, Jim Bertram believes it's high time more voters gave the 76-year-old Texan a serious look.

"After this administration, I think they are more open to Ron Paul than they've ever been. He's got a better chance than he's ever had, I think," he added.

Like many women in Lake Jackson, Dr. Paul was Phyllis Bertram's obstetrician. She says the well liked great grandfather has remained in the fight for all the right reasons.

"I think you can believe what he tells you. I don't think he will tell you something just to get elected. I think that's what keeps him going. I think he thinks he can do something good for the country," said Phyllis.

Bookseller Cecile Castillo has been following Paul for a quarter century and says his minimalist message has finally connected with an anxious nation's mood.

"Stay out of foreign wars and concentrate on our own country," Castillo summed up.

Many political observers have attributed Paul's Iowa surge to the general dissatisfaction of Republican voters with the rest of the GOP field.

Dissatisfaction because their all the same and are apart of the reason our Country is bankrupt! Its great people are waking up, it's really sad it took it all coming to pass before people would start to listen.
