Discussing about the role of an artist in the artists' community...especially in Deaf community. There are some artists who criticize, comment negatively, not supporting their fellow artists' work. This is mainly focused on artists who work with different mediums (paper, clay, metal, etc.) however this vlog DOES apply to performing arts, poetry and other forms as well.

  • same goes for films! i am disgusted when people say deaf filmmaker's script is bad. filmmaking is an art, too.

  • I agree unless this filmmaker asks for criticism then this person must expect all kinds of stuff whether it's good or bad.

  • Yes yes yes yes! These so-called "artists" who refused to disclose their methods of works also piss me off to no end. When they do that, I often gave them dirty looks. LIke you said, I do not forget.

Art is all about exchanges in order to improve ourselves in the long run. When one said, "not tell you" -- that's bullshit.

    You ever heard of De'Via?

    R-

  • Hey Ridor

yeah I've heard of De'Via and I'm not familiar with this.

  • Wow! Thanks so much! I learn something from you! Wish my parents allowed me go Gallaudet so I can take Art over there! Did you take art classes in NTID and Gallaudet Univ?

  • I have always been an artist since I was a child, I took some classes at NTID but Gallaudet? Never. However I worked as Publicity crew for the University Center (Student Life) when i was student there.

  • Hi Mikey,

I like and support your comment about artists needing each other for support. Take a look at my vlog and see if this will help you and other artists. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Cindy (Cindy22sunny)

  • That is a great vlog you made. Not only art, it is business that deaf people get very blunt or hurtful criticism about their works. Its interesting to see who gets criticized so much and who doesn't get criticized but instead is praised so much about their works. I think it depends on the self-confidence of a person who is displaying their work and how they show it to the world. In order to receive positive acclaim, its better to have previews by trusted sources before showing it to the world,.

  • I agree with you that Deaf artists should support each other, and nothing wrong with discussing what medium or techniques you use to make your art. But.... this is not something that is in the Deaf world alone. I know Hearing artists also will dismiss other artists as "hacks" and "trivial", etc.

  • I used to draw a lot back then. Most, I drew was the landscape, flowers, trees, and nature. I stopped. I NEED to find my inner passion to draw again. Time will tell. Good vlog as usual.

  • Wow! Great! While I was at Oral Deaf Catholic School, that school tried to cut down on our art into less than an hour per week! Wish I can focus to improve my art skills while I am full time working mother this time. I will try my best to find more time to work on my art after my last child finish his school.

  • Mike, i agree with your point about artists. In general about some artists in Europe can be very very bitchy, they can tell you in your face, Your works is terrible or trashy ones. why? it's about competition with each other.

i appreciate you bring up different subjects :)

  • Very true, I am artist myself (hobby) but one day I would like to be a professional artist as a cartoonist... I always like to discuss with any artist to share ideas and feedbacks that will help us all. Thanks for speaking out on behalf of us...

  • Excellent vlog! Thanks for sharing your tips! I fully agree with your point about sharing materials etc. I strongly believe in sharing with others.
