This video highlights pictures from the trips I have taken to St. John Bosco Boys Home in Mandeville, Jamaica from 2004-2009. I have taken over 3000 pictures over the years, so it was hard to pick even this many for this video.
St. John Bosco Boys Home is a home for approximately 150 orphaned, delinquent, and disadvantaged boys in Jamaica. It was opened in 1960 by the Sisters of Mercy from Cincinnati, Ohio. They have owned and operated the facility ever since.
My trips started in 2004 when I was attending Wright State University. The Catholic Campus Ministry goes down there for 2 weeks every December to put on program activities for the boys including a Choir, a Sports group, a Vacation Bible School program, and a Building group. Over the past 12 years, WSU has developed a pretty tight relationship with the boys at Bosco.
On my second trip to Bosco, toward the end of my trip, a couple of the boys who I developed great friendships with, asked if I could stay for Christmas with them. I had to tell them no because I had already made plans to leave with the WSU students. I arranged for the next year, however, to stay beyond my planned trip with WSU and stay for Christmas. It was an unbelievable experience. I promised myself that I would continue to go there as often as I could to give the boys the Christmas they deserve. It is a very humbling experience and really has made me understand and experience the true meaning of Christmas through the bare-bones that exist during that time of year in Jamaica.
Please enjoy the pics. They tell the true story. The 3 songs played in the video belong to their respective owners and no credit on my part is implied.
My youth group went to St. John Bosco's this past summer!! Those boys and their stories are amazing and very touching. Changed my life :)
