Isoroku Yamamoto (Japanese: 山本五十六, Yamamoto Isoroku?) (4 April 1884 -- 18 April 1943) was a Fleet Admiral (Gensui) and Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet during World War II, graduate of Imperial Japanese Naval Academy and alumnus of the U.S. Naval War College and Harvard University (1919--1921).

Yamamoto held several important posts in the Imperial Japanese Navy, and undertook many of its changes and reorganizations, especially its development of naval aviation. He was the commander-in-chief during the decisive early years of the Pacific War and was so responsible for major battles such as Pearl Harbor and Midway. He died during an inspection tour of forward positions in the Solomon Islands when his transport aircraft was ambushed by American P-38 Lightning fighter planes. His death was a major blow to Japanese military morale during World War II.

山本五十六（1884年4月4日—1943年4月18日），日本海军军官，第26及27任日本联合舰队司令长官。战死时为海军大将，死后被追赠元帅军衔。
山本五十六出生在新潟县长冈市的旧士族家庭，父亲为高野贞吉，因为时年56岁，因此给儿子取名为"高野五十六"。
1943年（昭和18年）4月18日，正在视察前线途中的山本五十六的座机被美军跟踪袭击，于布干维尔岛上空被击落而丧生。此事件被日本军方称为"海军甲事件"。5月21­日大本营才正式公布山本死讯，并追授山本大勋位、功一级、正三位和元帅称号。同年6月5日，在日比谷公园举行国葬。他是历任联合舰队司令长官中唯一的战死者。（古贺峰一以­殉职处理).
