The African Burial Ground National Monument is located at 290 Broadway between Duane and Reed streets. It is a federal site managed by the National Park Service. The museum is located on the first floor of the Weiss Federal building. The monument and reinterred bones that were dug up in 1991, are located behind the building at the corner of Duane and Elk streets. Take the 4 or 6 train to Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall downtown.

  • Slavery in America is always promoted as being only in the South. The discovery of these bones recognizes slavery in the North.

  • The first English slave ship to America was the Desire at Salem, Massachusetts in 1638.

  • This memorial is worth the trip if you go to the Brooklyn Bridge subway stop. There is a video for you to watch and footage from the original discovery of the bones.
