@Buckethead66 in 1964, Rupp recruited Wes Unseld, the best player in the state that year. But Unseld said he read stories about what Jackie Robinson went through and didn't want to face the same thing. He signed with Louisville. The following year, Rupp recruited Butch Beard, the best player in the state that year. He turned Rupp down for the same reason and also signed with Louisville.

Rupp did indeed try to recruit blacks. But they didn't not come because they didn't want to play in the south. After all, Chalrie Scott went to North Carolina a year after this and North Carolina is farther south that Kentucky. What stopped Rupp was the administration at KU. It's a fact, but they weren't the only school to do so at the time.
