I wonder if some of the large rock carvings that seem to have no real purpose might not have been practice pieces for novice/student carvers/shapers? The last example suggests this possibility to me.

So, is it possible that these odd shaped bosses are something akin to picture hangars?
Maybe some of these are designed to support decorations of various kinds. Or even wood parts of the structure that are now long gone? Just a thought...
