You can go for UKSF selection after serving so many years in the army, navy or airforce. The sbs are a more sea specialised force. However still practice all the skills the sas do such as cqb,, haho and halo jumps ect. They also operate on land as much as the sas as seen in Afghanistan being the first uksf team in the country as with the Falklands and Iraq

This is the best comment on this post. You are right : Paras are spearhead troops whilst Marines are long range Recon.

But I have often wondered how is a marine more " elite " say than a para.

Is it because Marines are trained in Explosives?

I am only going by the literature that I have read on the subject, over the years.

What would be the difference between the paras and say the RAF parachute unit.
