Baseball Rules, The batter is legally in the batter's box, and he attempts to bunt the ball, in his swing, his bat hits the ball, and immediately the ball bounces off the ground, in fair territory, and hits the bat again...what is the call?

  • If the batter was still in the batter's box, Umpire Dave got it wrong. It's a foul ball. That has been the professional interpretation of the rule for at least 50 years. If still in the batter's box, the batter should not be penalized for illegally batting the ball if it bounces up and hits the bat a second time over fair territory unless the umpire judges the action intentional. If the batter is out of the batter's box, the ball is dead and the batter-runner is out.

  • Ok, I'm glad everyone else is saying this. If the batter is legally in the box and the ball hits the ground in fair territory and then hits the bat again, it's a foul ball! That's the way it works for bunts, aren't the rules the same for a swing?

  • Foul ball.

  • thts not true

the batter has the right to the batters box,

so if he is in the batters box which it says at the beginning of the video, then it would be a dead ball

but the batter wouldnt be out

  • I think the video IMPLIES that the bat is NOT in the batters hands. If that is the case there is an out.

Unless this was a check swing/bunt I don't see that happening. Most batters have a follow through that leaves the bat behind the batter. Unless they are way up in the box this would put the bat on the foul side of the batter's box.

The only other way I could see it happening is if the bat broke. But by deffiniton the bat IS still in the batters hand. SELL THAT CALL EITHER WAY!

  • The answer is wrong in the video if the batter is still in the batter's box. If the batter is in thatbatter's box as said at the start of the video then it is a foul ball which in theory is a dead ball. If the batter steps out of the batter's box and then touches a fair ball the answer is correct on the video.

  • Why is everyone posting something other than the answer? It says right in the video what the answer is.

  • dead ball

  • if the bat was thrown at the ball intentionally its dead batters out if not balls in play. umpires judgement.

  • the answer is why the hell didn't you post a video.

  • Foul ball
