Don't know how you think FF7 doesn't hold up to today's standards but FF9 does. I find out of the many FF's out of there, 7/9 are pretty similar to one another. And Sephiroth is one of the greatest villains ever, but I would say it was because he had a lot of depth, Squaresoft doing the flashbacks to show a hero soldier going maniacally insane and wanting to destroy the world, It draws you in. Compare this to Bowser. He's a Koopa. He likes the princess. He takes the princess. End.
