This is a video that my sister and father took when they went on a trip to Jasper, Alberta, on March 25, 2007.

The avalanche patrollers were up in a helicopter, placing explosive devices on an out-of-bounds slope in an attempt to trigger avalanches and reduce the danger to the public. After a fresh dump of snow (about a foot) the night before and windy conditions, this slope was wind-loaded, causing a fairly high avalanche hazard. The explosives were dropped from the helicopter onto the slope with approximately 2-minute fuses. After about the first 30 seconds of the video, the first explosive of two goes off, but does not trigger any slides. Soon after, the second bomb goes off to the right of the first. After a short pause, a network of crack lines appear, and a huge avalanche occurs. Watch in the lower right-hand corner of the screen as the avalanche rides up the adjacent hill ("The Knob," closed at the time).
