@shilodance1st Ruffian was a filly, so she didnt worry about a herd yet & its not the trainers fault, he really didnt want her to race, its the greedy owners, media etc who thought the sport was dying & it sure did after this. The trainer looked after her all the way. Blame someone else.

A mare runs because she is leading her herd. Ruffian believed that she was leading her herd, there is no other reason she would have run so hard. Her trainer was an idiot.

@MonikaCobain97 Yeah- if Secretariat was a good sire yeah but unfortunately he's not. Everything is on the dams side (Ruffian). I'd say a Ruffian/ Northern Dancer cross would be wiser and that would have been a very expensive baby...

and the sport never recovered after Ruffian broke down. I have friends who were there that day when Ruffian broke down. Many people never went back to the track, nor did they ever watch another race. The destructive nature of human selfishness never surprises me.
