Thomas Jefferson was the third President of the United States (1801--1809), author of the Declaration of Independence (1776), and one of the most influential founders of the United States. Major events during his presidency include the Louisiana Purchase (1803), the Embargo Act of 1807, and the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804--1806).

A political philosopher who promoted classical liberalism, republicanism, and the separation of church and state, he was the author of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom (1779 - 1786), which was the basis of the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. He was the eponym of Jeffersonian democracy and the founder and leader of the Democratic-Republican Party, which dominated American politics for over a quarter-century and was the precursor to today's Democratic Party. Jefferson also served as the second Governor of Virginia (1779--1781), first United States Secretary of State (1789--1795), and second Vice President (1797--1801).

  • thomas jefferson was a ginger... wow

  • Thomas Jefferson was not a liberal. Fail. Big Fucking Fail. You get thumbs down.

  • @FavoriteStorage2 AAAAAnd what were those foreign policy disasters, and what made them relative disasters..

  • @connorqb17

He was still a major hypocrite, he was far too biased in favor of farmers and wealthy landowners, and his presidency involved some of this country's biggest foreign policy disasters.

  • When we talk about congress, like the 1st congress or the 111th congress or so on and so forth, then what is up with the sessions in each congress? Are there 3 sessions per congress. The 1st congress of the United States had 3 sessions. Why and what does it mean and why have it? HUH? Okay you history buffs, please tell me!

  • @overmind25 You know, one reason he bought slaves was because he didn't know if others would treat them well. He disagreed with slavery, so he bought slaves to take care of them. All in all, I think Jefferson was the best president we had ever had.

  • @overmind25 Don't be such a tool.

  • lol

"Don't ask others to do what you can do for yourself."? Slavery anyone? How about his plans to remove focibly the Natives from their land that he left Jackson to do? Anyway compared to most of the other Founders, his views on the state, corporations, and banks were very good.
