Given the nature of contemporary art practice, the condition of visual culture, the advent of new technologies, and many other factors, what is at stake today in seeing something as a photograph? What is the value of continuing to speak of photography as a specific practice or discipline? Is photography over? In April 2010, SFMOMA convened a range of major thinkers and practitioners to write brief responses to this question and to convene for a two-day summit on the state of medium.

Day Two, Part One. Participants: Peter Galassi, Blake Stimson, Joel Snyder, Douglas Nickel, Vince Aletti, Corey Keller, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Trevor Paglen, George Baker, Walead Beshty, Jennifer Blessing, Geoff Dyer, and Charlotte Cotton. Moderated by Dominic Willsdon and Erin O'Toole.

  • I'm shure almost nobody will comment on these video. But as a young photographer, I want to thank SFMOMA and everyone involved on giving this videos out to the public. I think that my generation really needs to care about Visual Culture, specially when it comes down to our medium. So, thanks for making this public and teaching people about these topics.

  • As human beings we are mesmerized by imagery – still or moving. Has the photography industry changed? Without a doubt. It’s really this simple – many people do not understand the tangible value of our imagery and our services. I blame this trend on the misconception that digital photography is less expensive than traditional film photography and I believe this “simple ignorance” has driven the value of our profession down along with our creative fees

  • @nickstrocchia his name is "Miroslav Tichý"

    look him up.

  • embrace it.

  • Does anyone have a link for the "Tiki" photographer mentioned? The one who built his own cameras in the 1970's?

  • @wpkg LOL i guess not. but there's an interesting topic going on @creativelive it's a free world-wide online classroom. :) :) *no spamming/marketing intended here*.

some serious stuff goin' on there. also heavy stuff like this topic often happened.

  • @3000danu I agree. But then that would suggest that another panel like this would be in order, and I do not think one is.

  • just an idea for next gathering/talk-show (or whatever it's called), maybe some of the world's working pro photographer can be included? :)

  • Where are the photographers on this panel? Besides PL, who is a working photographer?
