Killer, blues-drenched set filmed at the Memory Lane Club, Los Angeles, CA, in January, 1970 featuring the great Hampton Hawes on piano surrounded by Harry "Sweets" Edison on trumpet, Sonny Criss on alto sax, Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Bobby Thompson on drums. Blues shouter Big Joe Turner and tenor giant Teddy Edwards join in to share some stage fun, as if satisfaction wasn't already more than guaranteed.

2. Blues For J.L.
3. Feeling Happy
4. Shake, Rattle And Roll
5. Teddy's Blues

  • One of the greatest jazz videos I've seen. Everything about it is high quality & high level. We're watching & hearing some really great great legendary jazz musicians at their best - Hawes, Edison, Criss, Vinnegar, & Edwards. It surprises me that its Bobby Thomspon on drums because on all the Hampton Hawes albums he plays subtly just with brushes & here he's using sticks & really playing those drums! Great great video. Thanks for uploading it!

  • Fantastic! Big Joe as well!!!

I dig Bobby Thompson's playing but couldn't find him on many other records...

    Sonny Criss simply kills everyone!!!

  • great footage - bravo!

  • awesome thanks so much for puttin this up

  • top quality bebop.

  • what kind of video is this lol. Hampton Hawes' California meets Joe Turner's Kansas city.

  • Hawes is so reserved on he piano and doesn't take it too far, He lets the musicians play whilist letting them know he's the commander. Hawes was absolute top class.

  • well i got sucked in by the trumpet music straight away.

  • Thanx for this, I only had one part of the video. Great stuff!
