Playing Ability Test, level 3, section 5a, Small Area Position Drill #3.

Set up the balls 1-10 as shown. The 1-ball and 10-ball are both one-half ball off the rail. The foot spot is empty. Shoot each ball into the nearest corner pocket. You may not bump into any other ball. No banks. You may use any number of rails to get position, or none at all. Simple, right? Try it!!

This is very much like the "Sorto String" that I have been practicing, but with the String, you must hit only the foot rail on every shot, and no other rail. And the balls are closer to each other, but only 9 balls instead of 10 and in a straight line. I think the Sorto String is a bit more difficult because of the requirement to hit the foot rail on each shot.

This video recorded on location at FastMikie's Fun House, Del Mar, CA.

  • what is the sl7?

  • SL=Skill Level. It's a measure of skill as determined by the American Poolplayers Association (APA) and for 8 ball players the Skill Levels go from a low of 2 to a high of 7.

  • Mikie, you make these drills look easy. I'm only comforted by the fact that you are a SL7 & I'm a SL4 (but not for long!).

  • You can do it!

    I started as a SL4 as well.

    Practice will make it happen.

    Have fun!

  • thanks for the comment, your not to bad yourself... tecnically i would work a bit on your bridge, and the rhythm of your stroke... it seems a bit like u could strike any second, and not really a rhythm to it... might just be me.. and about the bridge, i mean that u maybe could spread your table-laying fingers more apart, i think you would gain more control over your harder backspin strokes :) , just my 2 cents. but your drills i will try next week =)

  • Thanks for the suggestions... I'll try it.

  • Great post Mike please keep them up!

  • First 5 balls, not too shabby. The top row = death for me lol. Looks easy when you watch it, totally different when you try to execute it.

  • very nice control.

  • Nice job Mikie!

  • his bridge is just fine. as long as it is steady and stable, then why try and fix something that isn't broken? I mean, have u seen his cut shots across the table?
