Leading British writer Howard Jacobson, a Jew himself, examines the origins and consequences of Christian belief. He argues that although Christianity originated in devout Judaism, for Jews it has been, for the most part, a calamity.

Jacobson talks to Christian and Jewish scholars. He visits Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Galilee and Rome to find out more about Jesus the Jew, and discovers how key Christian beliefs - including the notion of a Messiah and baptism - have roots in Judaism.

Furthermore, he asserts that Jesus didn't intend to start a new religion, and that for Jesus's family the new movement remained within Judaism: for them he was a charismatic Rabbi.

Is Judaism Christianity's guilty secret?

  • It is mind boggling how anyone in the modern world can believe that a primitive man who lived 2000 years ago was a god. I used to be a Christian and believed this...but I was only 10 years old and had been taught it in Sunday school each week. I know more today.

  • @ChannelingusXIV More of what? things that the world has cramed into your mind? pleasing man?

  • @Mrsmimimiller It is strange that Christianity (or its leaders over time) have purposefully made Christianity different then Judaism. For example they changed the day of the Sabbath from Saturday (the 7th day) to Sunday (the 1st day).

  • @GameLevelEditor Not sure what "symbols are for the symbol minded" means.

  • @ChannelingusXIV or why would god send his only son to die for our sin. If god is all powerful and the one who came up with sin, then wouldn't he have an easier, less messy way of doing this thant what is in the Bible?

  • Sometimes the problem isn't the book its the reader and where they choose to go with it. Symbols are for the symbol minded.

  • I think it's interesting when the scholar says "you get the title when you get the job done". Funny because, in America at least, someone takes a job, takes a title first, then start the job, start to perform the functions of that job. So the person doesn't have to prove that he/she did the job to get the title.

  • I just wish people would see religion differently. When people see the hypocrisy of the people that practice a certain religion, they automatically assume that the religion is no good, because they don't see the fruits that the religion promises to bring. They fail to realize that people are sinful by nature, thus they will corrupt religion, even if the religion is right. That doesn't take the truth out of the religion. It just shows the corruption of man and its desperate need of a savior.

  • I came across this study. A Jewish man compared Jesus to Judaism and showed that Jesus was and acted Jewish. Sohmer.net has that study. I wish I could post the link here but Youtube doesn't let me.

  • Jewish people make a big mistake by believing that Christianity is a totally separate religion from Judaism. Christianity is completely rooted in Judaism, even Islam acknowledges it (Taurat and Injeel). Even us, Christians, see it that way. The Gospels and the Torah are completely intertwined. Jesus brought another perspective on Judaism using the own Jewish law to back up his teachings. Others decided to label it as Christianity and then corrupted it throughout the years.

  • I may not believe in Christianty but I respect those that do. Faith in anything is important to people as it gives hope that there is something better out there.

  • @ChannelingusXIV You have been deceived, friend. Jesus is the savour of the world; the Son of the living God, who came to save us from sin. His word to one of the early churches applies to you...."You have left your FIRST LOVE."
