You can avoid the "beehive from hell" sound by not equiping a modified exhaust. I believe this is because when the game designers sampled engine & exhaust sounds from real cars, they used these sounds to simulate stock exhaust in the game. If you add sport or racing exhaust to boost horsepower, the tradeoff is making the car sound like crap.
