The Nēnē (or Hawaiian Goose) is the official state bird of Hawaiʻi. This rare goose evolved thousands of years ago from Canada Geese that were stranded on the islands, presumably as a result of turbulent weather. Over time, the geese lost much of their foot webbing, to better traverse the rough terrain of lava fields. While the geese once inhabited most of the main islands, they are now limited to Maui, Molokaʻi, and Kauaʻi, and the Big Island.

In my experience, all Nēnē seem to get an uncanny enjoyment out of biting anything that is precious to you, such as jewelry, cameras, and fingers.
