(Courtesy:Tom Buckley "eyeontv") Here are the first few minutes of the Washington, DC "Ranger Hal" broadcast from Tuesday, September 7th, 1965. Harold "Hal" Shaw with Ozzie (nee Oswald) Rabbit open the program. After an educational show-and-tell presentation on "The Great American Railway", Hal returns with puppets Wally and Marvin Monkey to pitch Hostess Bakery treats to the viewers. I'll try to add the remainder of the program in equal sized segments.

Hal's theme music is Mitch Miller's "Whistle Stop", provided by Mark Rockman.

  • I was doing archival research for the filming of LA Confidential, and one of the producers told me that he was one of the puppeteers for Ranger Hal. He also stated that he still had the puppets, but they were disintegrating quickly. Thanks for sharing this great kinescope!

  • Academy Award® winner Barry Levinson (Best Director of 1988 for "Rain Man") is proud of his work on WTOP-TV's Ranger Hal Show in the 1960s, including a stint as puppeteer.

Levinson fictionalizes those experiences in his novel "Sixty-Six"... writing about a young man working on "The Ranger Al Show".

  • What about Pick Temple? Does anyone have that?

  • I don't currently have any complete shows of Pick Temple. I hope to solve that within a few months.

In the meantime, I will post a very short interview conducted with Ranger Hal Shaw and Pick Temple in the early 1980s.

Watch for it on YouTube, and also at the KaptainKidshow web site.

  • I had my 'birthday' on the Ranger Hal show..

back in 63 ? they had this room full of really cool toys..planes and such.

ended up sitting in one of the rows and getting some really crummy toy's instead..lol..

I took a carrot with me to 'feed' one of the puppets.

When I got home, all my friends came running up to me saying they saw me on the show.

Way before Tevo..or video..never saw me on the show.

This was in the D.C. area somewhere.

    don't remember a thing about the show..thanks !!!!!

  • I loved this show when I was a kid...A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

  • Haven't seen this since I was a kid. Fun video.

I remember when Ranger Hal & Oswald the Rabbit came to Cumberland, Maryland back in the sixties and I was able to see them.

  • Wow, that was boring. I was a kid and watched this and I thought it was a lot better then.

  • I was a guest on the Ranger Hal Show in about 1965 at the Saturday Birthday Party. I was around 5 years old. We lived in College Park, MD across the street from a professional clown named Mike Mehalic, who was an early Ronald McDonald among other things, and made guest appearances on the Ranger Hal show. He got me on the Birthday Party. It was great fun! I remember at the end they dropped balloons and small toys and confetti out of the ceiling. Wish I had a tape of the segment I was on.
