A unique project is underway in Scotland, an attempt to build the world's first underwater sea turbines.
If successful the turbines would be an emerging technology that could help reverse global warming.
But the project is expensive and has raised concerns about possible damage to the fishing industry and marine wildlife.
From Islay in Scotland, Al Jazeera's Tim Friend reports.

  • Holy crap, comments are open on an Al Jazeera video? This is a first for me. Let me just express my love for the Channel. Keep up the good work guys. You're the best news on Youtube. AP is a joke with all their damned entertainment and personal interest stories.

  • I think the reporter just wanted to go to a whiskey distillery, even though it had nothing to do with the subject of the report!

  • would it not be possible to somehow enclose the turbine blades in a sort of baffle or cage? something like maybe a grating on both sides to prevent things from getting tangled in the blades and to prevent larger animals from being injured yet still allowing the flow of the water through?

  • green energy all the way!!
