this chapter gets a little bit complicated cause the condition is complicated. i'm explaining it the best i can, but if you have questions you can ask cause i might be able to clear it up and sometimes i think i explained something or even forget to explain something. it's not important that you understand it entirely but don't be afraid to ask. and no i don't have this heart condition, i'm just interested in things like this... don't ask... i watch Discovery Health all the time.

"They were actually surprised that I wasn't even more sick and messed up since those are the months organs are developing, and Mom had been into some pretty bad stuff. They were surprised I survived at all. Most women would have miscarried in the situation. So, in that way, I was a miracle. And since it was the early months, I wasn't born addicted, so I didn't have all the withdrawal symptoms I would have had if it had gone on. But I didn't get away unscathed. I was born with Tetralogy of Fallot, which is a congenital heart defect, meaning a heart defect you're born with. Basically I was born with a hole between the ventricles of the heart [a/n parts which collects blood, left and right] and obstruction from the heart to the lungs, which is a complicated way of saying that my heart was really messed up. It caused me to be a blue baby, meaning the blood pumped into my body wasn't always oxygen-rich like it's supposed to be, so I wasn't getting enough oxygen.
"So the only way to treat it is surgery. I was so weak and small that they had to do a temporary operation first to allow enough blood to flow to my lungs, which they did by putting in a shunt. Then when I was almost 2, they decided I was strong enough and big enough, not to mention, I now had health insurance through my mom's job, so we did complete repair. It's a really complicated procedure, but basically they closed the hole, removed thickened muscle below the pulmonary valve, which is a valve that blood goes through to the pulmonary artery and eventually the lungs, repaired the pulmonary valve, and enlarged the pulmonary artery that pumps blood to the lungs. They put some tubes in and stuff too. So basically they tried to restore normal blood flow and heart function to make sure I get the oxygen rich blood I need.
"The surgery was a success, but even with complete repair, there are often some ongoing problems. I had to keep up with regular cardiology appointments and tests. I couldn't do competitive sports and I have to be really careful when I'm exercising and stuff. My heart muscle function isn't as strong as most peoples', and I may have blood pressure problems in the future, but neither has gotten bad enough to need medication. My big problem has been arrhythmia, which are heart rhythm disturbances or problems with heart rate in one way or another. I take medicine for it, but they continue to be a problem, and they're the things that cause the dizziness and fainting, which is what happened this time. If it's really bad like it was this time, they have to do catheterization procedures to help. This is the second time I've had to do it."
They just sort of sat in shock. What could I expect after all?
"I know it's a lot to take," I mumbled.
"Yeah, but it's the way it is," Nick said, sort of surprising me. "So we'll just learn to deal with it."
"Really?"
"Yeah," Joe said, "I mean, it was a lot to take when we found out about Nick diabetes as well, but it's life and you learn to go along with it."
"So we can do that with this too," Kevin finished.
I smiled. I was a little surprised by how okay they were with it. Usually when people found out, they freaked. "Thanks guys."
"I do have one question though," Nick said.
"Shoot."
"You talked about your mom a lot, but where was your dad during the pregnancy and all?"

(i know i asked it on the last one) I've been putting finishing touches on some videos I've made so I'll post those once I decide on a production sign I guess. And just fyi, Jillian saw one and said it was my best one yet, so yeah lol. didn't mean to brag there but incentive for you lol.

nope but i really like watching Mystery Diagnosis and stuff. i wanna be a social worker though and one of the career paths i'm really looking into is Child Life at hospitals so like you work with sick kids but you're not a doctor, you just try to help them understand what's gonna happen (putting in IVs, surgeries, whatever) and you play with them and talk with them and make them comfortable and stuff. but i might work in foster care too so who knows lol.
