Here's my portable battery charger. It's a 5HP briggs directly coupled with a 12si 80 amp delco-remy 3 wire alternator. I done some wiring to make the alternator self-energize without changing the regulators. It's runs at 3600 rpm, but to get it to energize itself you have to rev the engine above 3600 rpm. Just a quick rev will do it.

  • Nice job! You can probablty do some light welding with that as well.

  • I'd have to make some other modifications to do that, 13.8 - 14v really isn't enough to keep an arc, but that was another project I was going to do was to make a small welder from an alternator and since I have a large welder on the truck, really haven't had the need for it.

  • Put an inverter on it and see what kind of usable power you can get out of it! Using a direct drive like I did too!! Slick! :-)

  • how did you wire it

  • that's a great idea with the direct drive system! lets see more of your work.

  • throw a power inverter on it, and you could power a tv.....
