Turns out Richard Carpenter had immediately recognized that it was Paul Williams who was singing--and who'd probably composed--this commercial for Crocker Bank when it aired on television in 1970. And when Williams received a phone call the next day from Richard, he was only too happy to fulfill the request to polish up the ditty's bridge and third verse (with co-writer Roger Nichols) for the next Carpenters single, because they--Karen and Richard Carpenter--were at that very moment sitting at #1 on the charts with "Close To You." I imagine the pupils of Williams' eyes momentarily turned into $$$$ signs...
