Alright Dinosaur Jr fans... here it is! This is the coveted and very difficult to obtain Fuzz Munchkin by Tym Guitars. This pedal is an absolutely faithful reproduction of J's #2 rams head muff that he uses when he plays live. In the 1970s, Electro Harmonix would frequently use whatever parts and components were on hand and because of this, there were several pedals made that were just slightly different than the "normal" production Big Muffs. This would create pedals that had some very unique sounds to them and J's rams head is said to be one of those odd little duckies.
There are a total of 300 of these being made. They are released in batches of 20 every few weeks because the mad scientist behind this beast, Tim, makes each one of them himself. The first 100 come with a fuzz munchkin shirt and instead of having serial numbers, each one is stamped with a Dinosaur Jr song, by order of album and release date, on the back.
These are extremely difficult to grab and when a batch comes up for sale, they are literally gone within seconds. I tried three times to get one and since Tym Guitars is based in Australia, I would have to stay up pretty late to make sure I could grab one. Needless to say, the bloodbath has lead to some very angry gearheads out there.
Here is what J Mascis had to say about the Fuzz Munchkin :
"Tym tried to harness my sound in a little a box and I think he's got it. Step on the Fuzz Munchkin for a good time. Dial down the volume for cleaned up rhythm then hit the bypass switch and the flood gates are open, the volume control dissapears, all sanity dissapears, its just searing lead tone cranked all the way up. So now if your sound sucks you must lay blame somewhere else, your amp, your pickups, your fingers, but don't blame the Fuzz Munchkin."
Gear Used:
KLH Custom Relics Fuzzcaster
Reverend Guitars Warhawk HB II
VOX AC30 combo w/ blue celestion speakers
Sennheiser e906
Pink Coily bullet cable
Fuzz Box Cocktail- Purple Nurple (check out my website for the recipe)
I own several vintage muffs and some modern clones and run it through a Hiwatt DR-103, Marshall SLP or Fender Twin/Deluxe. Hope you don't take it personally, it's just tech talking.. btw J runs his amp pretty clean, no doubt about it. A marshall with everything dimed it's something completely unusable with pedals...but you can hear that straight from himself, he stated it in several interviews. On the other hand, only on the marshall heads, he sets all the tone controls and the presence to 10.

@BialogardTube Nothing personal at all :) When I run a clean amp, everyone asks me to run it a little hot so that the pedal pushes the break up. When I run the amp a little hot, people tell me to run it clean..... I just can't win :)

This is no really giving justice to the pedal. You're running it in a breaking up amp, and so the muff sounds scrambling and unfocused. Also, as you have noticed, it does not make any difference when boosting the out, as the vox preamp is already done. Try it in a very clean amp (maybe in the low sensitivity input if it has one). J plays all his pedals like that, on Marshall/Hiwatts head with the input volume set very low, and cranks the pedal output. Sounds like night and day.

@BialogardTube Do you own one? Check it out at the 9:01 mark with the Humbuckers.... much more of a difference and my last comment.... both times I have seen J, he has walked up to his Marshall and just cranked every knob all the way up.
