With scenes of Manhattan, we hear a man leaving a message for the answering machine of Meryl Morgan (Sarah Jessica Parker). He claims it can be Paul (Hugh Grant) calling, and thought of her today, since it was the 3 month anniversary of their separation. He claims he saw her for the cover on the New Yorker magazine, and what a great success shes made herself being a realtor and her office. The machine stops, and hes run out of time. Paul calls back again, and tells her he regrets what he did, and asks if she is obtaining the gifts hes been sending. The machine shuts off, and as soon as once again, he calls back again to finish leaving his message. He claims he misses her.
Meryl Morgan is really a speaker at a formal dinner and fundraiser for charity, and although giving her speech on the podium, she reads Paul inside the back again, and gets quite flustered, and cant stick to her notes. She ad-libs, and finishes. They go outside, and Paul tells her he desires to talk, that is a switch, as he in no way wanted to just before. They both have assistants pursuing them, and they discover an opening inside the schedules, so the two can fulfill for dinner. Right after the dinner, they decide to walk household together and talk. It begins to rain, and he apologizes profusely for sleeping with someone else. Just before they are able to resolve anything, they arrive on the tackle of her clients household, where she is scheduled for a showing. She looks up, and he is for the terrace inside the rain, with no umbrella. Then he moves forward, and falls over the balcony for the ground, dead, with a knife in his back again. The monster is behind him, and has a gun in his hand. He clearly reads them staring up at him, and they run, and escape. These are now witnesses for the murder. The police come and tell them the man killed was an international arms dealer. The go household, each to their own place, with a police guard.
The following morning, the monster reads a store window with a large version on the New Yorker magazine, and reads Meryl Morgan on it; now he knows her name and where she works. The monster comes to Meryls apartment, disguised being a cop, and shoots the guard outside her door. She screams, and opens the door when she hears the gunshot, see the monster, and then slams the door and locks it. He shoots the lock and breaks sown the door, as Meryl climbs out for the balcony. She is secure, and the real police come, and thus does Paul. The police tell them that he is really a professional monster and wont quit coming following them, so they have to go into hiding inside the Witness Relocation Program, until he is caught. They both balk at this, but at some point realize they have no choice. They board a private jet, and take off. As soon as inside the air, the police tell them these are proceeding into hiding in Wyoming. Their cover will be that Meryl is the cousin of Marshall Clay Wheeler, and going to from Chicago. Meryl explains that these are separated, and dont ant to go into hiding together. The police say that for now, they have to, but they'll arrange different spots for them at a everlasting site. For any week or so, they will be together in Wyoming.
They land in Cody, Wyoming at night, and are met on the airport by Clay (Sam Elliott). He wears a cowboy hat, and has a white moustache, and looks quite very much just like a cowboy. Meryl is chilly, and he agrees to take them into town for the Bargain Barn for some shopping. It can be just like a Costco, and Meryl and Paul are astonished on the quantities and low prices. Paul is engaged inside the aerosol cans of bear repellant he reads, and buys several. On the store, they fulfill Clays wife, Emma (Mary Steenburgen), who is purchasing a rifle.
Clay tells them these are in seclusion at his place that is several miles outside the little town of Ray. They have to stay for the grounds there, as very much as feasible, to not raise suspicions. There is just a single spare bedroom, and Meryl lets Paul have it. These are told that the pc and phone both have a code on them, so they cannot use either unless of course they have permission and the code. She sleeps for the sofa.
Back in NYC, the monster comes to Meryls real estate office, saying he is inside the market to buy a home and desires to work with Meryl. Meryls assistant, Jackie (Elisabeth Moss), tells him she is away, but will call when she returns. When she isnt looking, he puts a bug beneath the desk, and slips a single into her purse.
