I'm from Klaipeda and recently I've visited Karosta, so..what I saw it surprised me, I couldn't imagine there was so poor district in Liepaja.. I saw bunch of dirty children in the dump next to one block of flats ant they were searching for metal parts in the broken fridgerator.. Actually I don't like russians, but that day I felt sorry for them that they have to live in that poor district, damn it seemed dangerous!

Was there in okt 1996,so already 13 yrs ago, when you Suksitis were only 10 yrs! Wonder how it has changed.I stayed with friends in one of the now empty flats close to the cathedral. Also in extreme cold winter january 1997 Been around in Latvia during a month, also Lithuania Klaipeda,Palanga, Kuldiga,Riga,Ventspils but mostly Liepaja which was still very poor and dangerous.Visited a very old banha and saw old Jewish grave close to the town Very little available then, left my car there for a friend
Also if you go there at night you can get stabbed the shit out of you, beaten up, robbed and for women - raped by Russian gangs. Been there, got beaten up, never going there at night there again.

Im sorry it happened to you. Unfortunatelly, Latvia was never decolonised after the 50 year long soviet occupation and russification period. The result is - all largest cities in Latvia are full of russians, most of them - very unpleasant people, even agressive like those gangs. Karosta has particularly high percentage of russians as it used to be a military site. But it is a very beautiful place and the sights can be seen much better in daylight.

A question, if I may; what would holy buildings have been used for when the Communists were in power?

The cathedral was used as a cinema and as a gym for soldiers during the soviet occupation years. After regaining the independence of Latvia, the cathedral started to function as a church again. The interior was damaged during the soviet times and it can still be seen inside there, because not everything is reconstructed yet as it was before those cinema and gym times. It costs big money to make it all nice again. :)
