PM Lee, SM Goh and Cabinet ministers pay last respects to Dr Goh
Singapore 15 May 2010
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said: "He was like a god. I mean he made the system work. The monetary policy. Later on, when I went to the MAS (Monetary Authority of Singapore), we were building on what he has done, and a lot of what we are doing today is what he had done and we build upon.
"I was watching the CNA (Channel NewsAsia) programme. (Towards) the end...he was making his, I think, last public speech as a Minister, and as he spoke, he said 'as you are coming into this, you are joining a holy order and your job is to build on what we have done, not treat it as a pinnacle, but as a foundation to make it better', and I think that is our job".
Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said: "He changed the course of my career. When I was a young civil servant, I actually resigned from the civil service to join Shell, the Shell oil company. He put a stop to it. He rang up the chairman of Shell and told him not to take me. He did not even know me then.
"So the point I am making is that he followed the careers of young officers whom he thought could contribute more to Singapore, so I rejoined the civil service. And later on, he started Neptune Orient Lines. Then, at some point, I actually asked for secondment to join Neptune Orient Lines. So without him starting Neptune Orient Lines, I would not have become the Managing Director of NOL and be spotted by the late Mr Hon Sui Sen to enter politics."
National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan said: "One day I wanted to resign from the civil service. He called me up and he persuaded me not to, and after that, he gave me this assignment. The first assignment he gave me was to go to SBS, at that time the bus services, to help in the restructuring of the bus company.
RIP DR GOH
