@kaindarkwind confederate soldiers from what I hear! chasing down an awol John Carter, or I have also heard that they want john Carter to join the union after the war as a soldier . .. and they want to take him by force

I think it would be a mistake to make him awol from the confederacy, only because part of the point of the book was john carter making friends with a horribly alien race while being from a culture that is inherently racist
