  • Last night I watched Thieves Like Us. It was my first Altman film. It will not be my last. TLU is the finest film I've seen in.... I don't even know how long it's been since I've been so affected by a piece of cinema, so eneveloped in the time and place and characters presented. The best directors, like the best writers, are really magicians at heart, and with TLU Altman performed the greatest trick of all: time-travel. If any of his other films approach TLU's mastery, I'm in for something good.

  • i love his association of a film being like a painting. A beginning, a middle, and an end. An overall feeling at first view, that leads to an grander, deeper context that is hidden and slippery subjective. intended or not.

  • boom mic operator got fired after this broadcast

  • @RonAlmeida i agree with you that it lacks the sarcasm of his later work, definitely, but the film is apparently meant be a critique of the frontier and modern cut throat capitalism, so Altman is giving his opinion on 'contemporary society'.

I prefer more personal/commentary based art too.

  • @lamentate07 Sorry you may be right, I haven't seen Mcabe and Mrs Miller since it was made, I remember it was very realistic but lacked the sarcasm of his later work. Where one sees the directors opinion of contemporary society in general. It of course is a matter of opinion. For example I don't like Italian realism in art. To me its more a craftsman ship, I prefer the French impressionists who interpreted it their way.

  • @RonAlmeida I don't know, there is plenty of Altman in McCabe. i wouldn't say it's the 'usual Hollywood style'.

I also prefer it to The Player and Short Cuts.

  • @lamentate07 M'cabe and Mrs.Miller was great for the usual Hollywood Narrative Style. Nashville, The Player, Short cuts etc. are his own style. Washing American dirty linen in public, that no one has done better.

  • Where was the clip from 'Mash' screened that they had to edit the word 'Tits' out.

How can artists ever work in such censored constrictions? Western freedon is such a myth.

  • He was the greatest of the Hollywood directors, for me.
