Can Dolomedes Spider Choose Her Egg Sac Among Dummies? イオウイロハシリグモ♀卵嚢選択

(Turn on the video annotations.) My pet female of the dock spider (Dolomedes sulfureus, family Pisauridae) always carried around her egg sac. What if it was taken away? Can she choose her precious egg sac among dummies? Note that the eggs inside were unfertilized. Late-June 2009 in Japan. This simple experiment was inspired by my favourite book written by a great French entomologist, Jean Henri Fabre (1823 - 1915).

飼育中のイオウイロハシリグモ♀が卵嚢を作ってから5日後。無精卵なのに卵嚢を肌身離さず抱えて歩き、絶食状態で保護している。母性本能の実体を調べるために、ファーブル­昆虫記で読んだ実験を真似て卵嚢を取り上げてみる。しかし卵嚢に触ろうとするだけで当然逃げ回る。無理やり奪うと怒った母クモに噛まれるかもしれないので、安全のためクモ­を一時捕獲し炭酸ガスで全身麻酔した。仰向けにされても卵嚢は手離さない。ピンセットで卵嚢を取り上げると簡単に外れた。偽物の卵嚢を用意（脱脂綿玉4個、トイレットペー­パーの紙玉2個）。♀を容器に戻し、麻酔から醒めるのを待つ。周囲に偽卵嚢を等間隔に並べ、本物の卵嚢も紛れ込ませておく。覚醒した♀は卵嚢が無いことにすぐ気づいた様子­。容器内を一回りすると、自分の卵嚢を迷うことなく選び、抱え込んだ。偽卵嚢の全てには触れておらず、視覚のみで選択できたようだ。臭いがあるのかもしれない。実物の卵嚢­は表面が汚れ、意外に固く締まっていた。偽卵嚢として固い素材（コルク片やスポンジなど）も試すべきだったかも。ファーブルの記述したナルボンヌコモリグモの実験結果（と­にかく手近にある丸い物体を取り返せば満足する）とは全く異なり、興味深い。

この実験は一回試しただけのone-take shotです。

昆虫記の記述を再現するつもりが、予想外の結果に驚きました。

今思うと、四角い箱の中ではなくクモを中心に円上に卵嚢を等距離­に並べるべきだったとか、色々と反省点はあるのです。

この♀は後に食卵しました。

my camera is canon powershot s5is.

i often attach it with a raynox super-macro lens dcr-250.

it can take interval-shots only when connected with a pc via usb.

hence if i wanna make a timelapse movie or a slow-mo, i just tweak the frame-rate (fps) of the footage using the vid editor.

yes, spitting spiders occur in jpn, too.

but ive never seen them yet.

bugs can be immobilized immediately if the administered co2 level is high enough.

when the co2 can is out of gas, the needed exposure time gets longer.

co2 anaethtesia has been used in the field of experimental entomology worldwide.

the effect is swift and harmless to the bugs.

co2 spray cans r available at the pet shop (for aquarium).

ive conducted similar procedures for many times in my field work, during which ive killed only one wasp by unfortunate postanesthetic complication.

unfortunately i was too busy to repeat the experiment with her 2nd and 3rd egg sacs.

but everybody can do this simple experiment on ur own with spiders in ur neighbourhood. :)

You should take the experiment to the next phase and test out different species' egg sacs. See if she can distinguish between her breed and another. Then test the same experiment a third time only with some of the sacs fertilized and others unfertilized. It would be interesting to see if spiders can distinguish their own eggs among those factors.
