'Don't Be A Dummy' was oringinally a British TV advert Gary Numan (of the then Tubeway Army) recorded in late 78/early 79 for Lee Cooper Jeans which was screened in late 1979. It was done on the back of someone from the ad agency hearing the first Tubeway Army album. Gary only did the singing. The track only lasts about 20 seconds and can be found at the end of the Tubeway Army compilation CD. It is not listed as a seperate track and is actually tacked onto the end of Remember I Was Vapour (Live). After Gary became famous, the people behind the advert asked him if he would record a longer version to put out as a single. He refused although a single was put out but with John Du Cann (hippe guru from Atomic Rooster) doing the singing.

  • TV ads are shit and annoying these days, this one is sheer brilliance and i remember it well.

  • This Commercial was one of the most distinctive commercials that there has ever been that represented a Youth Cult.

It was Post-Punk,so was very dramatic.

It was one of the first that represented a stylistic late modern expression look in tv commercials.

At it's first broadcast it was way ahead of any commercial on a Uk Television Channel.

  • Cool as the drool man.

That period had everything. Rockabilly, New Wave, Futuristic, Electro - Synth, New Wave of British Heavy Metal / Classic Rock, Burundi Beats, Rapping coming through, Soul, 2 Tone Ska all with a bit of class.

Boy the late 80s and 90s sucked: hair metal! Whitesnake and Aerosmith going naff, S.A. and W.

  • Sooo.. my friend and I were picked up off the Kings Road to be extras in this advert. Still can't spot either of us, but the bloody contact lenses hurt like hell :D

  • Anyone know who directed it?

    Adrian Lyne maybe?

  • I remember this being banned on afternoon and tea-time ITV, (as that was the only channel that showed ads, back then), and for good reason! I remember seeing it and felt quite disturbed by those green eyes.

  • This was first played in cinema advert. It was Numans first 'big' break before 'are friends electric' did the rest.

  • This was one of the first Modern looking adverts in the United Kingdom.

1979-post-punk,but still using punk styles of 1976-1977.

There was also an advert for Foster Grant Sunglasses at the time (tasty tarts) does anyone know where you can see this advert.

This advert was one of the most stylistic adverts of its time on television.

  • My mates and I, we all watched the advert when we were are around 10-11...still at primary school...A few of us walked the 2 mile or so trek at the time to buy out of woolworths lol
