Dead stick landing I had to make at Talkeetna, Alaska (TKA) in my 172 - 1958 straight tail with manual barn door flaps. Landing on Runway 36, but a bit of oil to clean up afterwards...

  • Beautiful landing my friend! I am getting a 1957 172 this weekend, and hope to become as good a pilot! Many more safe returns!

  • You will love the straight tail with barn door flaps, a great airplane that I wish I never sold, although it is in the good hands of a friend, who is also an AP mechanic. He still flies her out of Merrill Field (MRI) in Anchorage, Alaska. Best wishes!

  • Awesome job. Was the engine salvageable?

  • Wow, I've got to log on more often! Remarkably the engine was fine, need a bit of oil, and compression was great. The lesson here is do not get distracted when doing your pre-flight (what happened here), as the oil cap was still sitting on the battery box when I opened up the cowling. As bad and embarrassed as I felt about this, several senior pilots I know admitted to doing this. Keep your pre-flights uninterrupted---take care, Mark

Thank you for sharing your experience. That is what makes a good pilot: Share your lessons with the other aviators, so we can learn without running into these problems...I hope!

  • Great skills... Well done, that man.

  • Your heart must speed up a bit when you see the oil pressure down that low, i'd be like, what did I do wrong this time?

  • Nice landind, and calm to boot. But, that runway looked awefully short. Like landing on a Walmart roof...

  • Awesome piloting. My first plane was a 1959 172 with the O-360 and C/S prop.

With 40 degree flaps, you can really do a lot with that airplane.

  • very nice...esp the s turns..
