Signature song of slack key legend Fred
Punahoa played in Bb Maunaloa tuning.
Fred Punahoa was not only a virtuoso
slack key guitarist but also a reknowned
entertainer. He would often times wear a
paper bag on his fretting hand and play
slack key flawlessly. He was also an
innovator and musical genius.Kumu & uncle of slack key master Ledward Kaapana who incorporates many of Uncle
Fred's techniques in his playing today.I
first heard this song played by Sonny Lim of the Lim Family fame figured out the tuning, learned a few measures and tried to expand on that to capture the feel of this tune.I hope this is viewed as a tribute to Uncle Fred who had so much influence on ki ho'alu today.
