That was a fair stoppage. Once a boxer turns his back like that, it should be stopped.

@timrobwall ---agree w/ all u said, altholugh Sonny was such a mystery, hard to know what yr he was born. But he was some devastating puncher, and could also take a punch (look at Cleveland Williams fight). He was such a tough guy, though, that if a fighter could outbox him, he would seem to lose his effectiveness, as in 1st Ali fight, or in his lst fight against Leotis martin--once he tasted a little of his own blood, he was a different fighter.

wayne only protested once he knew it was safely over, he didnt indicate any desire to continue prior to that

just read in "King of the world" that in this fight they found 7 teeth in wayne's mouth piece from liston's jabs. I read it and came here and you can see the ref he keeps looking at the mouth piece. If Liston would have gotten a young start he would have been champ for several years till ali came along.

@Rockyfan10060 Liston was probably 36-37 years old when he fought Clay, not the 32 he claimed to be.

Sonny was a great fighter and a tragically misunderstood man, but I still think Clay beats Liston in both their primes. Liston hardly touched Clay in the first fight, even when Clay was blinded in the 5th round. Clay/Ali took a punch better than just about anyone in boxing history, and his speed and mobility at 22 years old would have been too much for Sonny at any point in Sonny's career.
