Calling elk with your voice

This is not the best example I have of this, both in terms of film quality and my voice, but it's better than nothing. We have elk that regularly go through our yard. There is a 6x5 bull with them, he's grown a bit shy as summer has worn on and tends to take off as soon as he sees you these days. He's the subject of this video.

Something I found out a year or so ago was that the female elk call can, with a little bit of practice, be reproduced by a female voice. So I started practicing. The only downside is that if you have junk in your throat, which unfortunately I have in spades today, the call won't be very clear sounding and won't reach as high. I will say up front, this is not my best calling example.

We came out this evening and the bull and cow were in the yard. It's pretty low light (just after sunset) and they were spooked. I was able to stand them quite still with my first few calls, despite the questionable quality in them. When it looked like they had calmed down a bit and were probably going to stay I ran inside to get the camera. I came out as they were getting ready to go and managed to stand him one more time for the video.

Hopefully I'll eventually able to record bringing him out of the brush with the call, like happened earlier this spring!
