On a bench, on the beach Just before the sun had gone I tried to reach you Plain faced and falling fast You looked so vacant like an empty shell Whose life had passed upon the ocean Before light shook the sky Down by the docks I saw The masts unfolding Don't turn away, please understand It's a life and a living And a way to keep the wolves away moshe shabot From hungry hands, from hungry hands

How the hell this wasn't a hit in 1977?

If you're into vinyl like I am, you should get it...the album in vinyl...don't go with the CD since they eliminated a few songs, including Crazy Water...

Surely, this one will cross many centuries as a real good one....

Ah man the end's the best part. Real hard to find a full version of this anywhere on youtube. Infact there isn't one.

Sounds like Bernie Taupin to me as well. Quite a lot like his early writings. The music is what throws me. It doesn't sound like Elton John wrote it. At least not all of it. The chorus is him. Not so sure about the rest though. The production is different as well. It doesn't sound like Gus Dudgeon did this whole thing. One of my favorite Elton John albums though. A so called undiscovered gem.

@amoreena2 I think you will find that Bernie Taupin DID indeed write these lyrics. And as for Elton's declaration that he was bisexual I think it had little impact and much less than the rise of new wave and changing musical styles that affected a great many artists for a while, and not just Elton John.

@mizofan, it does sound just fine. Elt and Leon do make a great team! Of course, how can we resist the classic years?
