@josiah566 yes, stride piano uses some particular patterns and riffs. James P. Johnson and Fats Waller are among the best remembered pianists of that kind.

@luigiranalli77 True. I see what you mean now. You're referring to the different styles of melody/right hand movement i presume?

@josiah566 yes, of course the bass in ragtime is the so called stride bass. But stride piano is a different thing, since that's the advanced ragtime originated in NY from people like James P. Johnson, a style that has rather peculiar features of its own.

@luigiranalli77 think he's talking about the extended left hand movement. That's usually what stride means.

That's not true. Rod Miller doesn't any stride piano, he strictly plays in authentic ragtime style. Ragtime was actually played both fast and medium tempo (almost never slow!!!)
