Nice solo work from Bill Page, Russ Klein and expecially Dick Cathcart...their own interpretations of the original and often-repeated solos found on the Miller record. Cathcart's solos always have beauty, swing, and an element of surprise...what a great artist he was!
By '65 Welk had a REALLY big band and probably at it's most popular..right in the middle of the English invasion. His records were selling like hot cakes and he was appearing week ends at the newly refurbished Hollywood Palladium. Here we hear the original Jerry Gray chart with six reeds and full brass. I don't think IN THE MOOD ever sounded better even by Miller himself. The Welk band could swing.. Swing was a popular feature at the Palladium as was champagne music, of course.
