-We (I mean me) had some difficulty in trying to figure out when to sit because of the separated solos between the tenors

you play it too slow, its supposed to be a Bop chart. much faster than swing

Sure, it was slow for OP, but that's how this specific arrangement was written. Maybe not how Mingus himself would've played it, but that doesn't mean its "supposed to be" something else.
