I'm playing the poor man's version of Beatmania (DJ MAX) on my PSP and having a hard time...

And damn, I can appreciate that type of performance.

Is that memorization or just fast reflexes?

It's not memorization. Tons of higher skilled IIDX players use Random a whole lot, meaning you will almost never get the same notechart twice. Pattern recognition and muscle memory are the big things with this game, as you reallly have to just get into your brain what kind of shape certain patterns look like and what your fingers have to do when you see that shape of notes, if that makes any sense.

its a bit of both, memorization by how your mind just recognizes automatically what note/button to hit. and since there is 7 buttons and turn table you probably start getting better and better making it more and more automatic to read it fluently. kinda like how you can read words easily and when you were younger you cant. and then the rest is just reflexes

long story short on everything - iidx is a tons and tons more reflexes than it is memorization.

seven keys with a turntable on the left/or right.

DIVINE usually plays with RANDOM modifier (he plays with MIRROR on this video), as do most experienced iidx players; this randomizes the note columns so memorization of the chart is near impossible. higher level play of iidx almost never requires memorization of the notechart. players can remember what the songs sound like and remember what parts are "note-heavy" or "scratch-heavy," but never the notechart.
