And let me show you what I mean:

-vrec&context=G27dc0c6RVAAAAAA AAAA This is Carlos Valderamma, who we all agree was totally sweet player. But by no means the best of his generation.
However, if he played today, he would be the best player in the world ( along with Xavi ) - because now the game only rewards his quick passing 5-a-side style at the expense of all else.
-
And you can see this when modern players do play on an authentic ( read: not reinforced by plastic binding or fibres ) pitch, or when a ref allows a little upper body physicality or fair tackling. The imaginary "high standard" drops immediately.
And thats while still having a laughable ball which bends by itself and travels at speed without any need to technique or power.
Spain play the same as they always have, just now the rules and such render everyone elses style useless.

Modern football only rewards one thing: quick reflexes and foot movement. Modern players play like fucking farmers shuffling around taking 10 touches to move a yard. With a real ball, and a real pitch, and real tackling, the minimum touches possible is the art. The ball may catch under your feet, you need to wind up to kick far, and you need to find your out instantly. Now you can simply turn around in a circle until the ref gives you a free, its fucking embarrassing.

1970? Possibly. The 1980's? Not a chance. The standard of football has improved exactly not at all since the 80's. Not even a little bit.
Everything is easier now. The light toy ball allows one to dawdle in possession and simply flick 50 yards when in trouble. The lack of legal tackling means you usually don't even need to do that - just turn around for your free kick. The astro pitches allow shit players to repeat training technique, instead of actually playing.

@adamkiksyou Uh, yes he does.
-
Maradona only used his left foot for his goal.
-
@dazzaburger Then you must be fucking blind.

To compare Maradona and Messi is pointless.
Both, at 24 are practically the same: The same goal record, the same style - both amazing, but not yet decisive for the national team.
Next, Maradona developed into a complete player - scored slightly less, but controlled matches more - enabling Argentina to win the World Cup, and Napoli to win the league against superior opposition.
If Messi can do the same, then maybe he will be as good as Maradona. Its too early to tell.
