Manuel is 43 years old and lives in Lisbon. Suffering from a mental health condition, Manuel had to deal with a lot of problems and ended up homeless. For more than 12 years he lived on the street, isolated from everything and everyone. In Portugal, the 'at risk of poverty' income threshold is EUR 407 per month. Currently, 19 % of the country's population is at risk of poverty and social exclusion. Thanks to the Housing First Programme, which focuses on homeless people with mental health problems, Manuel received the support and assistance he needed and now has an apartment
What an amazing man and an amazing story. Homeless people just need someone to give them a chance, someone to believe in them. And then they can do the rest themself. Behind the face of every homeless person is a story. Many of them have lost their way due to difficulties which often date back to their childhoods.
Maybe we should educate children in our schools about the hardships that homeless people face on the street. In that way, we will create a generation of more tolerant caring people
