I think she will be fabulous again in the new run of Met's Rodelindas in the new season

  • @Ariadne7710

imo her voice improved very much after the Armidas It was the best vocal exercise. Also as I came to hear many different nights at the begining she wasnt really good she very much improved during the performances

  • @LohengrinT I am sure she won't downgrade. I won't be here in Athens on the 14th otherwise I would try to get tickets just to see if the sound is better here than either at the Met or Covent Garden. However I think performers of her class should work out how to handle the last few years of a brilliant career so as not to become sad shadows of themselves. My last memories of Sutherland are truly horrendous. Only conductors get away with advancing age.

In Megaron of Music in Athens she gives a recital on May 14th. Lets hope she does not downgrade her voice for us Greeks She wont be singing difficult repertoire, her usual Lyrical roles.

  • @LohengrinT Of course you should hear her live even at this stage if you have not heard her before. I was merely comparing her present state with that of say 5 -10 years ago. i think that most of them now are too much into dieting and looking slim, young and gorgeous (which I applaud) but unless this is supported with a lot of gym work and lung expansion work it plays havoc on the voice as we all know. What will you see her in and where? I hope you enjoy it.

  • @Ariadne7710

well I will be hearing her soon for the first time live ahahahhaha but I think she has given us so many unforgettable moments already that someone shouldnt expect a singer after the age of 50 to be singing like she did in her mid 30s.

  • @LohengrinT You are better off hearing her on DVD these days. I saw the Covent Garden Traviata in June 2009 and was bitterly disappointed. It is a great shame but her voice does not carry any more. She has lost a lot of power and projection. Recently in Armida at the Met she could hardly be heard. She should stick to smaller houses or concert halls. On DVD of course the sound is magnified and is much bigger and clearer so loss of power doesn't show. Sadly all good things must come to an end.

  • this is lovely lovely singing, and it is no wonder. She is a lyric soprano, with an extraordinary voice, singing a lyric role.. she is also superb at Mozart( in the right roles... she cannot be equaled anywhere in the world, and she is fabulous in a couple of the major French roles( also for a lyric soprano)..

  • @BGSourgas

-Her Violeta was sublime - if she had tackled Sempre libera with a bit more freedom and an easy Eb6 at the end she would have rivalled Callas' Violetta.

-Each vocal instrument has its potential. Fleming sang what I personally call and what would be if there were such a thing, the repertoire of the "Lyrical Soprano Sfogato". Manon and Thais in full 3 octave support of the vocal line which we had not heard by the coloraturas who usually sang the role.

  • @LohengrinT Wow Lohengrin, let no one doubt the strength of your conviction! Always thought she'd become a truly great verdi soprano not just a great Amelia and Violetta...Around the time she was still singing Desdemona there seemed so much strength in the voice, and she herself talked about possibly singing Sieglinde(would be amazing)
