Singlish is made so as to relax our formalities in English, by doing so, we can actually make friends quicker than using perfect English. For example, if you go to a basketball court in Singapore and use perfect English there, you won't be well liked. It's not whether or not the other players can speak English like you do, but it's due to the fact that speaking perfect English in Singapore is not our culture, to us, it seems more like arrogance. Singaporeans can be formal when needed.

@voktemama apparently singlish is basically chinese grammar using english words, so your argument is partially invalid. Also, using perfect English grammar, like I do for this sentence, for the sake of condemning Singlish does not prove your point. We don't NEED english, it's called the bilingual policy. Singaporeans are required to learn their own mother tongue language as well as english. english is only chosen as it is not a native language of any of the main races so it is fair for everyone.

@duchyof6b08 English is not your native language. It's from England. Therefore, it does not matter how you much twist it and even how long you use it, it cannot be part of your culture. It's simple as that. Singaporeans use English because it's neccessary. It's just saddening that world's most respected language is being used in such a disrepectful manner.

firstly, majority of Singaporeans are bilingual and we are not native English speakers. secondly, Singapore has four major races, i.e. a lot of us have friends of other races. it is because of this that, in the process of growing up, we pick up certain traits of other languages and when incorporated together, we speak singlish, sort of like a universally understood language.. this is, Uniquely Singapore...
