Here is an acoustic guitar lesson of Knockin On Heavens Door originally by Bob Dylan, but has also been covered by Guns n Roses and many others. This lesson is by James from the acoustic covers duo "Handsome Alvin", check out our covers of this and other songs at:

http://www.youtube.com/aushandsomealvin

Please note to play in the same key as the Guns n Roses Version you will need to tune your guitar down a 1/2 step, the Dylan version is in standard tunning.

Verse Chords (twice):

G; D; Am; Am;
G; D; C; C;

Chorus Chords (4 times):

G; D; C; C;

Strumming:

D DDU or D DDU UDDDU (for Am and C double chords only).

I have also posted a seperate lesson on just in the intro.

Lyrics:

Intro

Verse 1
Mamma take this badge off-a me
I can't use it anymore
It's getting dark, too dark to see
Feel I'm knockin' on heaven's door

Chorus
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door,
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door,
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door

Verse 2
Mama, put my guns in the ground
I can't shoot them anymore
That long black cloud is comin' down
I Feel I'm knockin' on heaven's door

Chorus
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door,
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door,
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door
Knock, knock, knockin' on heaven's door

Outro

  • GREAT... Thanx

  • Would like to point out the second time you strum through the Am it's meant to be an Am7. so its actually G, D, Am, Am7.

  • this guy sucks!

  • Thank you very much!! learnt it in 10 minutes :)

  • very helpful!!!

  • Been playing this KIND of for years... kind of did my own fill for the Am and C notes. Thanks for simplifying the strumming pattern there. The difference between good and bad is in the details.
